  • Project description
The Paraguayan Chaco Neem Reforestation Project is located in the dry savannah of the Gran Chaco, a region famous for its dry and hostile conditions. The region is traditionally used for livestock, having its vegetation cover suppressed over the years. Thus, the purpose of the resent grouped ARR project is the reforestation of a region within the Paraguay’s Gran Chaco, in Boquerón. This will be achieved through the recovery of deforested and/or degraded forests, with the planting of native or exotic species. The expansion of livestock is considered to be the main reason of the increase in deforestation rates. Cattle ranching is also the main economic actor of the Department of Boquerón. Cattle population in the Department increased from 1 million to over 2 million in 10 years, confirming the trend of change in land use and economic importance of the activity The project activities are to plant trees in over 7,000 ha of degraded pasture, considering all the planned instances, offering vegetation cover to the soil and shade to the animals raised, changing the traditional pasture system, conducted at the baseline, to a silvopastoral system (SPS). Instance 1 has already covered 1,365 ha of the area. The silvopastoral system is a land use practice that intentionally combines trees, pasture and cattle in the same area at the same time, and managed in an integrated manner, to increase productivity per unit area1. Beyond the project’s ecological and carbon benefits, a proportion of the carbon credits generated will be dedicated to improving the social and environmental conditions in the project region, specifically contributing to improving deforestation control, and developing environmental education and other social activities.
