  • Project description
The Ankasa Conservation Area incorporates the Nini-Suhien National Park and the Ankasa Resource Reserve and is considered one of the most biodiverse forest ecosystems in Ghana. The project aims to contribute to sustainable management and conservation of Ankasa Conservation Area to improve the provision of environmental services and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. To achieve this, the focus is on avoiding deforestation and forest degradation by promoting the effective participation of local communities in forest conservation. The main objectives are to develop and implement a participatory management and good governance based system for the area, to determine the financial value of the environmental services as well as methods for measurement, assessment, reporting and verification (MARV) of forest carbon. The project aims to produce the following positive impacts: a reduction in the loss of forest biomass and GHG emissions in the area; an increase in forest carbon stocks; improvements in biodiversity, watershed conditions and other environmental services; and lessons on governance issues and benefit sharing arrangements for REDD+ in Ghana.
