- Project descriptionThe Emiti Nibwo Bulora project involves small scale farmers for mitigation of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and climate change in Kagera region in western Tanzania. The programme supports small scale farmers to learn about and engage in tree planting and other land use management techniques that are both sustainable and deliver economic and social benefits to small scale farmers and communities. The long term commitment to tree planting and subsequent management under different feasible, controlled and verified farming systems will be the major means for participation in mitigating GHG emissions which enables small scale farmer to access carbon finance through a process of aggregation of carbon assets and receive additional carbon revenue streams through the adoption of productivity enhancing practices and technologies. Hence, economic benefits will be based on: (i) increased yields and productivity and (ii) additional income sources due to payment for environmental services. An important co-benefit will be enhanced resilience to climate variability and change. The proposed project activities are all based on small scale agroforestry systems which contribute to increased soil carbon storage as well as carbon sequestration in biomass. The agroforestry systems used are boundary planting, dispersed interplanting, fruit orchards and woodlots.
