  • Project description
The overall aim of the project is to avoid deforestation and forest degradation within Mkuwazi Forest Reserve and Nyika National Park in the Northern part of Malawi. The forest within these areas is at risk of deforestation and degradation in the future through encroachment and overexploitation. The forests are regarded as a free resource by communities surrounding them, making them susceptible to exploitation. In addition to the maintenance of carbon stocks, avoiding deforestation and forest degradation will help preserve biodiversity, maintain important watersheds, and provide opportunities for livelihood development through the sustainable use of forest products by local communities. The project aims to develop co-management and resource user agreements between local community groups and the Department of Forestry or Department of National Parks and Wildlife. Specific management objectives include: Developing an income from carbon finance for forest conservation; establishment of livelihood activities that provide an income or resources without degrading forest cover; water catchment protection; maintenance of biodiversity.
