  • Project description
The project will reduce GHG emissions through the acquisition and protection of forest lands threatened by agricultural conversion. Over the life of the project, the area will continue to be protected from deforestation. Selective logging will take place within a restricted area of the project during the life of the project. Avoidance of deforestation will take place through the purchase of land that would have been sold to industrial scale agricultural farmers. Program for Belize staff will monitor the area through ground surveys and communications with surrounding communities to prevent degradation through illegal logging. Smartwood Certified selective logging will take place in the project scenario. Detailed logging plans will be created to minimize the impact of selective logging. No additional roads will be built within the project area. The selective logging conducted will be actively monitored and certified by Smartwood (FSC). When first established in 1994 the Rio Bravo Carbon Sequestration project was the first carbon project of any kind in Belize. It was designed and implemented with the explicit goal of demonstrating how REDD projects could attract private capital through a market based incentive program (carbon offsets). On February 3, 1995, The Rio Bravo Carbon Sequestration project was accepted by the United States Initiative for Joint Implementation Secretariat.
